Music
Tizmoret Shoshana offers concentrations in chamber music and vocal music. Both vocal and chamber music instruction takes place in small groups, ensembles, individual sessions and master classes. Musicians also study history, composition, theory, sight-singing, ear-training and conducting.
Public performance and exhibit are integral to the program, with faculty and student concerts, readings and master classes regularly scheduled. Tizmoret Shoshana often hosts high-profile guest artists. The retreat culminates with an evening gala concert, dramatic performance, readings and art show.
Chamber Music (strings, woodwinds, piano)
The music program focuses on repertoire from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Contemporary periods, with an emphasis on ensemble skills and musical expression. Time is available for individual practice and coaching, and work on solo repertoire. Participants perform for their peers and have, as well, several opportunities for public performance. Besides coaching sessions, there are masterclasses and professional performances given by guest artists and artists-in-residence.
Vocal Music
In the Vocal Music concentration, singers practice and perform solo and ensemble repertoire, focusing on works of Jewish content. Genres from madrigal to art song are explored, as well as original compositions (see Guitar & Song-writing). Two, three, and four-part songs alternate with more popular works. Singers learn basics of good vocal production, as well as more advanced vocal techniques. Hidden corners of the vocal repertoire are explored, particularly, Jewish works in Hebrew, Yiddish, and Ladino, as well as English.
Guitar & Songwriting
In this concentration, participants learn the basics of song composition in a variety of popular styles, with emphasis on personal expression in a Jewish context, while exploring one’s individual relationship with HaShem, the supreme creator. Basic chord progressions, instrumental technique, and rhythmic patterns are taught as the building blocks and means towards self-expression.
Musicians examine the dynamic between the writing of lyrics and composition of melody, as well as the relationship of melody to harmony. Some prior guitar experience is helpful, but not required. Participants should, however, bring their own instruments. All participants in this concentration will leave with a CD of their own original work, in addition to the tremendous satisfaction, inspiration, and confidence that comes from doing creative exploration.
