Vocal Music Program

Vocal Music

Tizmoret Shoshana offers concentration in vocal music. Vocal music instruction takes place in small groups, ensembles, individual sessions and master classes. Musicians can also study history, composition, theory, sight-singing, ear-training and conducting. Public performances are integral to the program, with regularly scheduled faculty and student concerts, readings and master classes. Tizmoret Shoshana often hosts high-profile guest artists. The retreat culminates with an evening gala concert, dramatic performance, readings and art show.

In the Vocal Music concentration, singers practice and perform solo and ensemble repertoire, focusing on works of Jewish content. Genres from madrigal to art song are explored, as well as original compositions. Two, three, and four-part songs alternate with more popular works. Singers learn basics of good vocal production, as well as more advanced vocal techniques. Hidden corners of the vocal repertoire are explored, particularly, Jewish works in Hebrew, Yiddish, and Ladino, as well as English.
